The Significance of This Letter - it is a real turning point in the life of this child This and the last few letters represent a turning point in the life of this child. For the last 28 years we have been quietly studying the life and teaching of Bawa Muhiayaddeen (may God be pleased with Him), first for 12 years living at the physical feet of His Holiness in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1975 to 1986, which was the residence of His Holiness from 1971, when He first came to America, until December 8th, 1986, when He died in America. Then for the next 12 years, from 1987 to 1999, we spent most of our free time visiting the Mazar or Shrine of His Holiness, visiting His Holiness in this way after work each day, and on the weekends, when not working at Unisys Corporation as a Systems Specialist, visiting the Shrine where His Holiness is buried, in a small farming community about an hours ride outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, and about an hours ride from both work and from home, which formed a triangle that we daily traveled; a half hour to work, an hour to the Shrine, and an hour home, for 12 years. And third, for the last 4 years, from 2000 to 2003, we have spent retired, living at home with my wife Crisi and her mother, who is now 95, trying to quietly complete the last 12 years of the 36 years that one must live with His Shiakh, before the disciple establishes the state of knowing the difference between right and wrong, the state of conducting one's life according to good, which in the Islamic tradition is called Shari'at, the first of the four stages of spiritual development on the path of God, known in the Islamic tradition as Shari'at, Tariqat, Haqiqat, and Ma'rifat: Shari'at - the realization of good and evil and the conducting of one's life according to the good. Tariqat - the unswervig and acomplete acceptance of the good and the carrying out of every action accordingly. Haqiqat - the realization of the Divinity and the beginning of communication with God. Ma'rafat - the state of merging with God. And after these four steps of spiritual ascendence, His Holiness teaches us on page 466 and 467, in the Glossary of the book, "The Golden Words of a Sufi Shaikh", that what next comes on the path of God is the fifth level of spiritual ascendence. The state of one who has transcended the four religions and has merged with God. This stage in the Islamic tradition is called Sufiyyat. "In the state of Sufiyyat, one speaks without talking, sees without looking, hears without listening, relishes fragrances without smelling, and learns without studying." "That learning cannot be learnt, and that understanding cannot be acquired by mere study. These and many other such states come with acquiring the qualities of God, and losing oneself within those qualities." "Although one still exists within the body, he has built within himself the palace of divine luminous wisdom. One who has perfected this state is a Sufi, in the Islamic tradition." Now after 28 years living quietly at the feet of our Father, Shaikh Muhammad Rahim Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him), this child has started to carry the gift of God for this age, which is the life and teaching of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him), into the world, announcing to the world, whenever possible, the first great thing that has happened to all of us living in our age, which is the life and teaching of God for our age, which God has personally and ever so lovingly placed "within" each of us living in the world today. And announcing the second great thing that has happened to all of us, that God has also placed "outside" of us in our age, the life and teaching of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) and of the Children of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with each of Us), which is all of us living in the world today, if we but want it, if we but again want to live as "One with" God within us. The life and teaching of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) and of His Children which God has also placed "outside" of us as a finger pointing to what He has personally and ever so lovingly placed "within" each of us. This letter, Spiritual Letter 53 to President George W. Bush, and the previous letter, Spiritual Letter 50, to Mr. Thomas L. Friedman, a Columnist for the New York Times, and to our two loving brothers in Iraq, Sayyid Iyad Jamaleddine, and Sayyid Hussein Khomeini, is a real transition for this child, but now it seems very appropriate. A Little Bit About Louie - so you can fit Louie into what you are currently doing outside of you My dearest loving bothers and sisters, like many of you this child has also been on a journey for the last 64 years, and counting, living for the last 28 years at the feet of a wise and holy saint, His Holiness, Shaikh Muhammad Rahim Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him). So who am I? Who is Louie? A worldly answer is very easy. I have lived in America all my life, as did my parents, and I am of German and Irish ancestry. I was raised Catholic and I graduated from Villanova University in 1962 with a BS Degree In Electrical Engineering. I also graduated from Temple University in 1972 with a Masters Degree in Special Education, and again from Villanova University in 1987 with a Masters Degree in Computer Science. I was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, and served my country during the John F. Kennedy administration, and participated in the successful resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I have worked in America for 36 years as an Engineer, Salesmen, Teacher, Computer Programmer, Manager, and then as a Computer Specialist for Unisys Corporation for 18 years, finally ending up as the "Road Man" for a local house painter, gradually becoming a mother to 25 house painters, attending to their every need, which turned out to be the best job of my life, a job where "Lou" again became "Louie". And now I have retired, and I devote all of my time to the pursuit of a better definition of "who I am", of "who God is", and of my true relationship with God within me, just as some of you are my dearest loving brothers and sisters. 4. A Little Bit More About Louie - to appreciate what it means to meet His Holiness on the "outside" and to try and live at the feet of His Holiness, Shaikh Muhammad Rahim Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) within our very own life As for a spiritual answer to "who is Louie", the answer is also very easy. I met His Holiness, Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) in the summer of 1975 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in America, when I was 36 years old, and have been absorbed in His life and teaching for the last 28 years, a life and teaching that fits so beautifully with the life and teaching that you gave us a glimpse of in your 3 hour interview on March 2, and thank God, a life and teaching that also goes beyond it, goes beyond what you shared. That goes beyond it in a way that only one who has gone beyond it could share. Such is the gift of having met Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) on the "outside" of us, a guide for our life, the light for the path of faith within us, that if we like, will take us to the truth of God hidden within our wisdom within us, bringing peace to our life. For as His Holiness teaches us, in the book, "The Wisdom of Man", and reproduced on the back cover, "Wisdom is the light to guide your path, faith is the path, truth is God, and understanding this is peace." Such is the gift of having met Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) on the "outside" of us, the finger pointing to the relationship of God and True Man within us, to the light of our wisdom that guides us on the path of our faith, to the truth of God hidden by God within our wisdom, but even more importantly is having met Him "inside" of us, within my own life, as the higher self within each of us, and as the power of God within my higher self, as our wisdom and the wisdom within our wisdom, as our direct connection to the "Oneness of God and True Man" within us, as our direct connection to the truth of God hidden by God within our wisdom. Yes, we most certainly met His Holiness "outside" of us, and lived in His physical presence for almost 12 years, from 1975 to 1986, and that was truly an amazing experience, but what is definitely more important than any "outside" meeting, is that while He was with us physically, we have also met His Holiness on the "inside" of us, before He died. In this way, we have truly met His Holiness within our very own life, and continue to live with His Holiness within our very own heart and consciousness, within our daily life of living in the world, of dealing with the illusory world "outside" of us, by turning to God within us, and in this way, by making "my life" into "His life", by putting what is in "my hand" into "His hand", by turning to the "stuff of God" within us to deal with the world "outside" of us, by turning to our wisdom, and the truth of God within our wisdom, to deal with "us" as "separate from" God, by turning to our Shaikh within us, and to God within Him, to move forward what God has started within us, before we die, which is "us" as "One with" God, and in this way, by becoming increasingly aware of the real world "inside" of us. And that experience of "God" within us, of "God's Stuff" within us, and of "What God is doing" within us moving forward within us, is beyond any amazing experience, even the amazing experience of being with Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) on the "outside" of us. For that experience is the salvation of our soul, and the true success of our life, the success of letting our "wisdom reason over our fate", of letting the qualities of our "inside" become victorious over the qualities of our "outside", that will never leave this child, that will never leave your loving brother Shaikh Muhaiyaddeen (Louie Beutler), a name which His Holiness gave this child in 1980 when we visited His Holiness in Sri Lanka (formally Ceylon). 5. A Little Bit More About Bawa - so we can fit us into what Bawa, and into what God within Bawa, are current doing within us, allowing us to become One with the "Three of Us" within us, within the "Three of God" within us, allowing us to become One with "The Disciple, the Shaikh, and God" within the Triple Flame of God within us, within "Ya Allah, Ya Rasul, Ya Muhaiyaddeen" within us Ceylon or Sri Lanka is a small island off the coast of India, and was the home of His Holiness for 85 years before His coming to America in 1971, and for His Holiness intermittently for the next 15 years, with His Holiness moving between Sri Lanka and America, from 1971 to 1986, alternating between Sri Lanka and America every 2 or 3 years, attending to His children in both countries until His death in 1986. The "outside" of His Holiness is now gone, and has now been replaced with the "outside" of His Children, but the true gift of such an "outside" Teacher or Wise Man for each age is still here, which is the "inside" of such a Teacher, as well as the "inside" of His Children, which have in truth become One, and will never leave any of us living in this age, whether we met Him "outside" or not, if we have but the faith in God to pick it up, and if not, if we have but the clarity to join with the "outside" of His Children, in what they are doing, in order to directly experience the "inside" of His Holiness for ourselves but this time through His Children. For as one of the Companions of the Prophet, Abu Bakar (peace be upon Him), told the grieving people of Mecca and Medina at the time of the death of the Prophet Muhammad (Sal.) in 632 AD, "For those who have worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead, But for those who worship God, Muhammad lives." And as His Holiness Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) teaches us in the beautiful discourse, "How To Merge With The Guru", that He gave to us on April 26, 1972, ---- Beginning of an Excerpt From a Talk by Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) ---- "So, my children must understand this clearly. You have a Guru. You are very lucky to have a Guru, and you are very lucky to have a very perfect Guru. He may be in this world for some more time. (And), I request that you, even later, ever after that, (that you help) other children who may come and see you. Then it is your duty to take them, and hand them over to the Guru. So that they will also find their own salvation. The Guru that you have in this world could be the only Guru. And even if you do not know who this Guru is now, once you have handed over your entire responsibility to the Guru, then perhaps you may come to know who the Guru is in fact. But to see that Guru, you have to have that firm determination and certitude (in God). He will not search for your help. He will not search for the help of the disciples. All that He will search for or perform are God's duties, and God's commandments. He doesn't want your food. He doesn't want your things. He doesn't want what you have. Whatever He says, since He is not there, since He is not learned, will come from somewhere else. Whatever He says comes from somewhere else. He will speak only when that vibration of the sound comes, and He will not speak at any time without the permission, without the voice of God, asking Him to speak. And for every word that He says there will be four or five other witnesses to the words that He speaks. It is like that. That is a secret. The way that He speaks is a secret. The Guru is a secret. My children are a secret. The world is a secret. And God is a secret. If you want to realize these five secrets then you must have this faith, determination, and your certitude (or iman, in God). My children must not feel that they are the only people who must escape and reach salvation. Any children or anyone who comes to you requesting the same thing, requesting the truth from you, then you must teach them the same thing that has been taught to you by the Guru, with love, with compassion, with patience, with tolerance, with peacefulness, and with the 3000 good thoughts and good characteristics of God. When they come to the Fellowship, and they say that they want to become members and accept the Fellowship, then you should show them. You should show them and embrace them with love and with compassion. As what can successfully do battle with the "enemy of our soul" within us, which in truth is each of "us" living as "separate from" God within us, as "separate from" each other, and as"separate from" the Creation of God within us, which in truth is the state of our current life, our current life of "separation and differences" that we are all currently experiencing with our brothers and sisters in the world that we collectively see in our ignorance as existing on the "outside" of us. Which in truth is but our fate, our karma, and our false destiny, which in truth is but the stage upon which our lessons of life must be learned, becoming our funeral pyre when we die, if we have wasted our time on this stage, if we have failed to learn our lessons before we die, if we have failed to establish our direct connection with God within us, by establishing our direct connection with the "Stuff of God" within us, with our wisdom and the truth of God for our age, with our Shaikh within us and with God within Him, in order to liberate our soul from the "enemy of our soul", before we die. Allowing our soul to make its way back into the "Oneness of God and True Man" within us, as the "understanding" of the "Oneness of God and True Man" within us, for the benefit of all of the Creation of God and of True Man within us, which is the earth world or dunya within us, and the hereafter or akhirah or kingdom of God within the dunya within us. And in this way, to meet the life and teaching of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) within ourselves, and join with Him within us, with the Guru of God for our age within us, with our Shaikh within us, and God within Him, in what They are doing within us, which is to finish revealing True Man within the Creation of God within us, and in this way, to join with what True Man in maturity is doing within Them within us, which is revealing God within the Creation of True Man within us, completing in this way the cycle of God-Man/God-Man within us, of God revealing True Man within the Creation of God within us and of True Man revealing God within the Creation of True Man within us. Which is the only true point of Their coming into the world in our age, of Them appearing both "outside" of us, for some of us, and within each of us, for all of us, and the only true point of any of us living in this age, the only true purpose of our life, of any of our lives, the only true purpose of all life living in this age, which is to join with God within us to complete God's intention within us, before it is too late, to reveal True Man within the Creation of God within us, and to reveal God within the Creation of True Man within us, before we die. And before the "outside" of all of us is prematurely destroyed by one of us, which can occur if the "beast" that is coming to maturity within each of us comes to maturity and comes out of at least "one of us", before True Man that is also coming to maturity within each of us, comes out of at least "one of us". Excerpt From The Book: A Mystical Journey: For a beautiful description of this process, of how we either become the beast and destroy all of us who wish to remain "separate from" God, or become True Man and liberate all of us from our life of "separation from" God, if that be our true intention, please read Chapter 3, "The Wondrous City", starting on page 35, in the section called, "The Three-Eyed Beast", in the book, A Mystical Journey, where His Holiness Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God be pleased with Him) teaches us, --- Beginning of an Excerpt From a Book by Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) --- The Three-Eyed Beast "Watch out! The beast is coming! It is as huge as a mountain. Fire is spewing out of its mouth, and the entire city is shaking. This monstrous beast is called Muyalahan. It comes from hell. Its form is all the evil qualities of the world rolled into one: arrogance, karma, illusion, and the three demons known as tarahan, singhan, and suran. (Note: as defined in the Glossary for the on-line book, Islam & World Peace: Explanations of a Sufi, tarahan, singhan, and suran are the three sons of maya or illusion. Tarahan is the trench or the pathway for the sexual act, the birth canal or vagina. Singhan is the arrogance present at the moment when the semen is ejaculated (karma). It is the quality of the lion. Suran is the illusory images of the mind enjoyed at the moment of ejaculation. It is all the qualities and energies of the mind) Children, it is coming closer! But do not be afraid, this beast cannot touch a true man of iman or the qualities of Allah. It cannot touch the Ill-Allahu that comes from Allah's qudrat (the power of God's grace and the qualities which control all other forces). Stand to one side, out of the way of danger. I will tell you what is happening. Oh, the beast is almost here! Look, it has three eyes! One eye is lust, one is hell, and the third is the burning fires of that hell. All three eyes are blazing with fire from the passage of hell. The flames are spreading to this section of the city, and all the houses are ablaze. The whole city is burning! Come, you can watch with me through the window of Compassion, the window of Rahim. Look! The beast has been scorched and blinded by its own fire, which has ignited its body. It is burning in the fire from its own mouth. Unable to see the path, it is panicking, frantically dashing here and there, and crashing into things. How horrible! Listen to it screaming and howling as it writhes on the ground. The whole city shudders and quakes at the sound. When this beast, which exists in the heart of man, approached the house of the soul, when it faced the truth and the resplendence of truth, its eyes were blinded. Like this, my children, whatever one develops within himself in this city of the world, whatever fire he lights, that same fire will burn him. He himself nurtures his own demonic beast. It comes from within him. It is his own qualities and actions that are destroying him and making him suffer. They are the cause of his poverty, illness, karma, and misery. Whatever desire he has for land, gold, sensual pleasure (woman), and anything that is forbidden, or haram, whatever pride, jealousy, deceit, anger, treachery, doubt and suspicions he harbors - all these evil qualities come out of him and burn him to a crisp. Whatever suffering he undergoes arises from within himself, and then, unable to bear such misery, he blindly runs here and there, not knowing his way. He cries out to countless gods, but they do not come to help him. He turns to race, religion, and caste, yelling, "Mine!" and "Yours!" He shouts mantras and performs cunning tricks, or tantras. But nothing comes to his help. The demonic beast that burns him is the very state that he developed within himself. He has forgotten the one truth that could help him (that God is One, and so are we, when we join again as One with God within us, letting God finish what God has started within us, which is to reveal True Man within the Creation of God within us). He runs hither and thither, wailing from the pain of the fire, and finally he rushes toward the ocean of illusion and plunges into the drain-hole of karma, down the birth canal from which he first came. Look how he twists and turns and tumbles as he falls into that tiny hole. But that doesn't help him either, for even there, the fire is not quenched. May this information about this letter help us better appreciate the task at hand, which is to become a slave of God within us, making our life eternal, allowing God witin us to use what He Created and placed within us to complete His intention, to answer the question that God asked of God in Anathi, in the time before the beginningless beginning, which started what we are now incorrectly experiencing as ourselves, as "separate from" God, as "separate from" each other, and as "separate from" the Creation of God within us, living with our brothers and sisters on the "outside" of us, the question that God asked of God in Anathi, the question "Who am I?". And the first answer to that question is, "You are God.", you are the Creator of the Creation, you are the Nourisher, and the Sustainer of that Creation. And the second answer to that question is, "You are True Man within the Creation of God", the Creation of God which is the dunya, the earth world, where we are now living, you are the Oneness of God and His Creation. And the third answer to that question is, you are the Oneness of True Man and the Creation of True Man, the Creaion of True Man which is akhirah, the hereafter, the next world, the kingdom of God, and within that, you are the "Oneness of God and True Man", which in truth is God and True Man. This is what we must understand and support, my dearest loving brothers and sisters, if our life is to become successful before we die, we must join in partnership with God within us to let this happen within us.
